If you’ve ever thought about owning your own holiday home, you could find few better places to base yourself than the beautiful Lake District World Heritage Site. Avoid the hassle of booking, searching for the best deal, the right place in the right part of the region – instead you can come and go, whenever you want, for as long as you want, to one of the most celebrated and most stunning parts of the world. The beauty of your own second home in the Lake District is that it’s yours to visit whenever you want it – and there are so many reasons to make our caravan and holiday park the place to make your home from home. Whether you’re looking for rest and relaxation or a base for getting out for an adventure, a place for all the family or a romantic bolt-hole for two, you’ll find what you’re looking for at Herdwick Croft. Here are 10 reasons to buy your Lake District holiday home at Herdwick Croft.
Central Lake District Location
Herdwick Croft is in the perfect gateway location to the centre of the Lake District, with easy access to the market towns of Keswick and Cockermouth, just a few miles away. You’ll find a fantastic range of unique shops and boutiques down every alley, as well as cultural pursuits like the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick and Jennings Brewery in Cockermouth. They’re also great for walks, with Keswick’s Derwentwater Launch taking boats out to jetties around the lake that serve as the starting point for climbs such as Catbells and Walla Crag – you can also hire boats and kayaks and take to the water yourself.
Great for Skiddaw and other Lake District Fells
One of the first things you’ll notice upon arriving at Herdwick Croft are the absolutely incredible views of the North Lakeland Fells surrounding our site, with Skiddaw and Binsey among some of the fells we overlook. These stunning views are impossible to tire of, and your Lake District lodge will benefit some of the best in the park. What’s more, because we’re only 3 miles from Skiddaw and close to so many other fells, like Sale Fell, Dodd, Ullock Pike and more, we’re perfectly located for those looking for an outdoor adventure, and to get out and climb some mountains!
No 10 Year Change Over
While many caravan parks stipulate that tenants must upgrade their holiday lodge after a 10 year period, here at Herdwick Croft you’re free to keep the same lodge here for as long as you like – so if you find the home from home that you truly love, it’s yours to keep for as long as you love it!
Friendly, Family Run Park
Our park is family owned, and run by a welcoming, friendly group of people who are always on hand to help you with anything you need. We have over 25 years of experience helping people create their perfect holiday home in the Lake District, so we can guide you through the process from an initial site visit right through to the handover. Once you’re here we’re happy and available to give you a helping hand – just give us a wave and we’ll see what we can do.
With its secluded, private location, Herdwick Croft is the ideal place for your second home in the Lake District, affording you comfort and peace of mind for when you’re living away from the site, safe in the knowledge that your lodge is located somewhere private and secure.
We’re an ideal location for your dog to enjoy too! You and your dog are welcome at Herdwick Croft, and – unsurprisingly given our location in the heart of the Lake District – we’re surrounded by some fantastic dog walking opportunities.
On the Shores of the Only Lake in the Lake District
Did you know that Bassenthwaite Lake is the only true lake in the Lake District? We’re just 50 yards from the shores of Bassenthwaite here at Herdwick Croft – the lake is ideal for those interested in watersports, with Bassenthwaite Sailing Club only one mile away where you can hire or launch a sailing dinghy, and the lake is excellent for windsurfing and canoeing too. If you’re keen on fishing, you’ll find pike, perch, brown trout, vendace and more – you can get a permit just up the road at the Castle Inn. It’s also just a great place to relax on the shore enjoying the sun or a picnic!

Just down the road from us on the edge of Bassenthwaite Lake you’ll find this relatively new addition to the Lake District. The Lakes Distillery only opened its doors in December 2014, but it’s already swept up numerous awards over the last few years. Producing whisky, gin, and vodka, the Lakes Distillery was named ‘one of the best new distilleries in the world’ by Time Out in 2016, and with good reason. There are daily tours and tastings, and you can even meet their alpacas on weekends. There’s a fully stocked shop, so you can take home a souvenir to savour, and the on-site bistro is award-winning, too.
Our uniquely tranquil and natural setting is ideal for those looking to relax and get away from it all. With tranquil countryside and woodland areas surrounding the site, the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake just 50 yards away, and a river running through the property, this is the perfect place for relaxation. Enjoy the soothing sounds of the running water, soak in the sun’s rays and relax and take in the views.
