About Us Herdwick View

We recently bought a cottage at the top of our caravan park and we have just started to refurbish it. The cottage has an interesting history – it was originally part of the Armathwaite estate and was built to train young girls how to keep house before they went to work in the hall. It was then used as a gardener’s cottage for the estate gardener. The original kitchen gardens are opposite the cottage.

Our family bought the cottage when the estate was sold in the 1930’s. My Great Grandfather (Herdwick Billy) lived there with his wife and daughter (Maggie Wilson) until he died. My Great Aunt lived in it until she went into a home about 7 years ago. As you can see from the photos the cottage has slipped into a bad state of repair. Our intention is to refurbish the cottage to a 4 star standard but keeping as many of the original features as we can. We can then let it out as a holiday cottage. The cottage should be ready for next Spring. We will also be changing the name of the cottage from Herdwick View to something new in the next few months…we just need to decide!

We’ll keep you posted as things progress, make sure you Like our Facebook page to keep up to date!
