Herdwick Croft is in the perfect gateway location to the centre of the Lake District, with easy access to the market towns of Keswick and Cockermouth, just a few miles away. You’ll find a fantastic range of unique shops and boutiques down every alley, as well as cultural pursuits like the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick and Jennings Brewery in Cockermouth. They’re also great for walks, with Keswick’s Derwentwater Launch taking boats out to jetties around the lake that serve as the starting point for climbs such as Catbells and Walla Crag – you can also hire boats and kayaks and take to the water yourself.
Great for Skiddaw and other Lake District Fells

On the Shores of the Only Lake in the Lake District
Did you know that Bassenthwaite Lake is the only true lake in the Lake District? We’re just 50 yards from the shores of Bassenthwaite here at Herdwick Croft – the lake is ideal for those interested in watersports, with Bassenthwaite Sailing Club only one mile away where you can hire or launch a sailing dinghy, and the lake is excellent for windsurfing and canoeing too. If you’re keen on fishing, you’ll find pike, perch, brown trout, vendace and more – you can get a permit just up the road at the Castle Inn. It’s also just a great place to relax on the shore enjoying the sun or a picnic!
Lakes Distillery

Just down the road from us on the edge of Bassenthwaite Lake you’ll find this relatively new addition to the Lake District. The Lakes Distillery only opened its doors in December 2014, but it’s already swept up numerous awards over the last few years. Producing whisky, gin, and vodka, the Lakes Distillery was named ‘one of the best new distilleries in the world’ by Time Out in 2016, and with good reason. There are daily tours and tastings, and you can even meet their alpacas on weekends. There’s a fully stocked shop, so you can take home a souvenir to savour, and the on-site bistro is award-winning, too.
Relaxed Lifestyle
Our uniquely tranquil and natural setting is ideal for those looking to relax and get away from it all. With tranquil countryside and woodland areas surrounding the site, the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake just 50 yards away, and a river running through the property, this is the perfect place for relaxation.
